Welcome to another issue of Foundations! We are proud to share with you these stories that illustrate the excellence of our alumni, students, faculty, and staff.
Our cover story shines a light on the strong legacy of Fulbright scholars on our campus. From 1965 to this spring semester, IU South Bend faculty members have spanned the globe to teach, conduct research, and carry out professional projects around the world. 12 of our faculty are part of the more than 400,000 Fulbrighters who have come away with enhanced skills, new connections, and greater mutual understanding. Their experiences are inspiring and thought provoking.
Don’t miss the uplifting article of our stellar alumnus and elementary school Principal Ryan Towner, who showed up to a school assembly expecting one thing and received a major surprise instead. It’s a heartwarming story that is sure to make you smile. Speaking of K-12 schools, we showcase how our School of Education is taking on the teacher shortages through innovative and collaborative programs with our partners in local school districts. We have so many alumni making a difference every day in students’ lives.
We also are excited to report on our inaugural gala fundraiser, Night of the Titans. I hope you will enjoy the photographs and article about the amazing evening where esteemed former executive vice chancellor Alfred Guillaume Jr. was presented the Chancellor’s Medal. Additionally, Alumni of the Year honors were awarded to several deserving alumni while the overall proceeds from the event raised more than $25,000 in scholarship money for our accomplished and talented students.
We have also been focused on strengthening our athletics programs. Our volleyball program is a great example. We bring you a fun account of their successes, which includes the origin story of their new coach, alumna and former player Alison Derdzinski!
Finally, we applaud two Indiana University alumni who serve on my Chancellor’s Cabinet and are helping build a brighter future for our campus. IU South Bend has so much to offer our community and our students. From exciting high-impact practices and student life, to alumni who lead in their chosen professions all around our region, this issue is brimming with Hoosier Spirit and Titan Pride!
Enjoy!
